As many of us know, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has never been one to bite his tongue.
And if you needed reminding, just ask the fan who found himself booted from the stage in Luxembourg last night (June 30).
The band were wrapping up their set at Luxexpo with their usual closer, ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’, when Armstrong invited a fan onstage to take a turn on guitar. An obvious dream moment, right? Well in this instance, not quite.
Instead of launching into Green Day’s sentimental classic, the fan decided to strum the unmistakable intro to Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’. Cue one massive “oh, fuck me” from Billie Joe, who immediately snatched the guitar back and waved the kid offstage, adding a dry “nice try” as security gently ushered him away.
Armstrong then finished the song himself, reminding the crowd exactly whose show they were at. Liam Gallagher, never one to miss a moment, caught wind of the clip and responded on X with typical snark: “Best song of the night.”
It’s the kind of bizarre crossover moment that feels almost too scripted. I mean Green Day versus Oasis, with a fan as the fall guy. But it also echoes something Noel Gallagher once said back in 2011: that more bands should just play Oasis songs. “Green Day could do even more than one or two,” he said. Maybe not.
The whole thing happens just as Oasis gear up to launch their massive ‘Live ’25’ reunion tour in Cardiff this week. The band’s comeback has dominated headlines — from soundcheck leaks to Aldi renaming itself “Aldeh” — and the hype is real.
But Billie Joe wasn’t having it. This was a Green Day gig, and he wasn’t about to let ‘Wonderwall’ hijack the finale. It was punk, it was petty, and it was perfect.
So really the moral of the story is if you’re lucky enough to get pulled onstage by a punk icon, maybe stick to the script — or get ready to feel the wrath of Billie Joe Armstrong.
