Charli XCX is completely done playing nice. Or at least, the version of her in Overcompensating is.
In a new clip from the upcoming Prime Video series, the Brat icon goes full diva, tearing into a stunned assistant over being asked to perform her 2014 breakout hit. “You think I wanna play fucking ‘Boom Clap’ in a fucking college – are you joking?” she yells, deadpan fury dialled to eleven.
Charli plays a chaotic version of herself in the series, which premieres May 15. She also serves as executive music producer of the project.
Overcompensating stars Benito Skinner (aka Benny Drama) as a closeted ex-jock navigating college life and a fresh identity crisis. From the trailer alone, the vibe is full-blown Gen Z meltdown. It includes all the things you would expect from a show focussing on adolescence: sex, parties, shame spirals, and surreal cameos.
Charli’s brief but explosive scene already feels like meme material, and her involvement fits the tone. It’s irreverent, self-aware, and fully leaning into the pop star paradox.
The show is backed by A24 and Amazon, with Jonah Hill on board as executive producer. There are also appearances from Kyle MacLachlan, Connie Britton, and Kaia Gerber. In other words, a stacked cast for what looks like a messy, meta coming-of-age binge.
It’s not Charli’s first on-screen role — she’s voiced characters in The Angry Birds Movie and UglyDolls, and played herself in the 2021 Gossip Girl reboot. But this looks like the start of a bigger pivot into acting.
Her first lead role is coming soon in The Moment, another A24 production. It’s a mockumentary about a pop star prepping for her first tour, co-starring Alexander Skarsgård. Filming recently kicked off in London.
Whether or not Overcompensating turns into a hit, Charli’s doing what she always has — weaponising pop stardom on her own terms.
