My Chemical Romance paid tribute to their home city of New Jersey last night with a cover of Bon Jovi’s ‘Living On A Prayer’.
My Chemical Romance continues to pull out surprises in their setlist.
The emo giants have been touring their ‘Long Live The Black Parade‘ tour, celebrating 20 years of their iconic 2006 album The Black Parade. Throughout the show, the band play the entirety of their classic album, before playing a more intimate set to close the night.
Throughout several shows this tour, the band have played unreleased tracks and covered The Smashing Pumpkins ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’. And on Saturday night, the band threw everyone a surprising curveball by covering Bon Jovi’s ‘Living On A Prayer’.
While performing in their home city of New Jersey at the state’s MetLife Stadium, the band would pay tribute to their hometown and fellow Jersey icon, Bon Jovi. “I’m proud to be from New Jersey,” frontman Gerard Way told the audience. “Being from the east coast of Jersey, I learned how to survive. … You need Jersey bones to survive. And in saying that, we’re gonna play you guys what may be the New Jersey state anthem.”
The band would finish their show with a high-energy cover of the song, and you can bet the crowd were more than happy to join in.
Covering Bon Jovi is no easy feat, as vocalist Gerard Way would admit during their performance. “So f****ng high,” the singer would laugh after belting the first chorus. Some strain in the chorus aside, the song works pretty well with Way’s voice. Which is even more impressive, given they were 24 songs deep into their setlist by this point. Find me anyone whose voice isn’t shredded after screaming ‘Teenagers’.

Funnily enough, that wasn’t the only surprise that night. Belleville’s Mayor, Michael Melham, would appear onstage during the show to offer them a key to their home city. In response, the band presented Melham with a bundle of wheat and a fish from Draag, the fictional setting for The Black Parade.
My Chemical Romance haven’t announced any plans for an Australian tour yet; however, some speculate we could hear more by next year.
