More than a decade after his passing, Wayne Static is still revealing new layers.
Rare, unreleased footage of the Static-X frontman has emerged, offering a raw glimpse into a pivotal moment in his early career, the footage was uncovered by filmmaker Matt Zane who is currently preparing a documentary exploring the relationship between Wayne Static and Tera Wray.
While the project isn’t scheduled to officially enter production until later this month, Zane has already begun digitising hours of old archival tapes filmed with the couple.
1999
During that process, one tape immediately stood out, labelled simply ‘1999’ in handwriting, the cassette turned out to contain a previously unseen interview with Wayne Static, filmed shortly after Static-X completed their first run on Ozzfest 1999. The timing places Wayne right on the edge of the band’s breakthrough, as their momentum was beginning to snowball.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Zane said. “It was raw footage from the first time I officially filmed Wayne. Almost 20 minutes of him, right when everything was starting to happen. The tape is over 25 years old, and it still plays.”
The interview predates Wayne’s relationship with Wray by several years, but Zane believes it still fits naturally into the broader story the documentary aims to tell, rather than focusing on the image Wayne projected onstage, the footage captures quieter moments that reveal something more personal.
“There are a few things in there that really show Wayne’s depth as a person and his sense of humour,” Zane explained. “It adds context, and I’ll definitely be including some of it.”
The discovery is significant, Wayne Static’s early years were defined by relentless touring, industrial metal excess, and a larger than life aesthetic that often overshadowed the person behind the hair and distortion.
Footage from this era is rare, particularly material that hasn’t already circulated online or been repackaged over the years, Zane has confirmed that more information about the documentary will be shared as production progresses.
