A new unauthorized documentary centred on late Static-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray is moving forward, despite major pushback from both estates and a failed crowdfunding campaign.
Filmmaker Matt Zane has confirmed he’ll now self-fund the project, after the documentary’s fundraising attempt reportedly collapsed under pressure and controversy, as reported by Metal Devastation Radio.
According to Zane, the campaign ran into trouble almost immediately, less than 24 hours before it launched, the estates of Wayne Static and Tera Wray publicly objected to the film.
The following day, Zane was hit with a cease-and-desist notice from both estates, sparking backlash across the fanbase and adding to the perception that the project shouldn’t move forward.
But Zane says the resistance hasn’t changed his plans:
“I’m sure the estates and everyone over in the current STATIC-X camp thought that if they could prevent my funding, that would be the end of it,” said Zane.
“I’m here to tell you I’ll move forward regardless and will self-fund this project to ensure that it’s made.”
Fans divided
The film has already divided fans, with a segment of the community previously accusing Zane of pushing the doc as a “cash grab.” Now that it’s being self-funded, the entire financial burden sits on Zane, and any real profit feels unlikely, Zane has also insisted money was never the point.
“Wayne and Tera asked me to make this. They were my friends,” Zane explained. “I couldn’t get it done while they were here, but I can do it now. They wanted their truth and their story out there, and they trusted me with all of their video projects. I won’t let them down.”
Zane also says he still hopes the families will eventually come around:
“I sincerely hope their families watch it,” he said. “I truly believe they will come to understand that my intention was always to honor Wayne and Tera’s wishes.”
Whether this ends up being a raw tribute, a messy flashpoint, or both, it’s already clear this story isn’t going away quietly, weekly updates of progress are expected to land via Zane’s Instagram.
