Weezer have announced their 20th studio album, continuing one of rock’s most unusual naming traditions with another self-titled release, this time wrapped in a striking gold colour scheme.
The veteran alternative rock outfit also dropped a brand new single, “We Might as Well Be Strangers,” featuring guest vocals from Karly Hartzman of indie rock favourites Wednesday (per Loudwire).
Scheduled for release on August 21st via Reprise and Warner Records, the new record arrives after the band’s recent 30th anniversary celebrations and sees the group revisiting the creative energy that shaped their earliest years.

Colour coded albums
While fans have previously embraced Weezer’s colour coded self titled albums, including the Blue, Green, Red, White, Teal and Black records, the latest chapter will now be known as the Gold Album.
The project marks a notable milestone for the band, frontman Rivers Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson reportedly collaborated on the foundational elements of songs together for the first time since Weezer’s landmark 1994 debut. Three of the group’s four members contributed to the writing process.
Production duties were handled by Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blum, with Blum reportedly pushing the band toward a heavier and more aggressive sonic direction than fans may be accustomed to hearing.
Leading the announcement is “We Might as Well Be Strangers,” a reflective and emotionally charged track exploring distance, change and fractured relationships, Hartzman’s contribution adds another layer of vulnerability to the song, creating a compelling vocal contrast alongside Cuomo.
