Matthew Rhys Contemplates Cannibalism In The Widow’s Bay Trailer

Share

Widow’s Bay is a town with a history – and that history involves eating people, in Apple’s new comedy horror series.

I like the look of Widow’s Bay, but I was always going to, because if you set a horror story on a remote island off the New England coast the first thing my brain is gonna yell is “Lovecraft!” and the second is “Stephen King!” and the third is “Jaws!“, which means I have to at least take a look. And so I did, and the look was good:

What’s the plot?

As the official synopsis tells us:

In Widow’s Bay”something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no wifi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again.

This one comes to us from creator Katie Dippold (The Heat, Ghostbusters).

Who’s in it?

  • Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis.
  • Kate O’Flynn as Patricia.
  • Stephen Root as Wyck.
  • Kingston Rumi Southwick as Evan.
  • Kevin Carroll as Bechir.
  • Dale Dickey as Rosemary.

When’s it out?

Widow’s Bay creeps into Apple TV like a slow-rolling fog on April 29, with a triple episode premiere, and the remaining three episodes dropping weekly.

What’s the vibe?

It does feel very Lovecraftian to me. Maybe that’s just the seaside location – it puts me in mind of the Deep Ones from The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and I reckon Rhys could pull off the Innsmouth look pretty handily.
