Really, that seems kind of inevitable at this point.
Having wrapped duties on Netflix’s Stranger Things quite recently (it was a bit quiet – you may have missed it) and already acted opposite Jenna Ortega in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, ’90s icon Winona Ryder will next be seen in Netflix’s other spooky smash hit, Wednesday. Which is both a bit obvious and absolutely perfect, so let’s enjoy it, shall we?
Wednesday Season 2 Cast Announcement
What’s the plot?
Wednesday is, of course, a spin off/reboot of venerable spooky franchise The Addams Family, which started as a one panel comic strip by creator Charles Addams before being adapted as a classic TV series in 1964 and a couple of really fun movies in the ’90s. This take comes from genre veterans Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville) with the help of executive producer, lead director, and Hollywood Goth King Tim Burton, seem to have cracked it with Wednesday. The series puts the titular Hot Topic fan in a new context by packing her off to Nevermore Academy, a prep school for monsters, kids, and monster kids, where she navigates the travails of adolescence, along with all the supernatural shenanigans we know and love.
Now, as for this upcoming season? Hard to say. But showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar said over on Tudum, “It’s our dark delight to fling open Nevermore Academy’s gates once more as we begin production on Season 3. We thank our invincible cast and crew for their continued commitment to doom and gloom. To the fans, we appreciate your patience and ravenous online commentary — your twisted theories have inspired nightmares. This season, we welcome new students, new teachers, and excavate some long-rotting Addams Family secrets. Don’t say you weren’t warned.”
Who’s in it?
Confirmed as returning to the frightful fold we have…
- Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, of course.
- Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Wednesday’s chipper werewolf roomie, last seen fleeing into the wilderness.
- Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin: barista, sheriff’s son, love interest and Hyde.
- Joy Sunday as siren student Bianca Barclay.
- Georgie Farmer as Ajax Petropolus, a gorgon student crushin’ on Enid.
- Moosa Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger, bug-controllin’ nerd.
- Evie Templeton as Agnes DeMille, Wednesday stan.
- Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams. No notes.
- Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams. And again: no notes.
- Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, and honestly this cast is better than Heat.
- Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams.
New this semester we have…
- Winona Ryder as Tabitha.
- Chris Sarandon as Balthazar.
- Noah Taylor as Cyrus.
- Oscar Morgan as Atticus.
- Kennedy Moyer as Daisy.
Plus the already announced Eva Green, who’s playing Morticia’s mysterious and long-absent sister, who it turns out is canonical. And we’re bound to get more cast details soon.
When’s it out?
No idea! We’ll keep you posted.
What’s the vibe?
You may balk at Wednesday‘s “doin’ it for the kids” approach, and for all its EC Comics style grue, this is pretty safe fare. But that’s the thing, mon ami: like Twilight, this is a gateway drug. The Wednesday fans of today are the Dario Argento fans of tomorrow. Maybe. Look, just watch it with your kids. Get ’em Unknown Pleasures for Christmas. Nature will take its course.
