Wonder Man will return as Marvel’s struggling superpowered actor gets a callback.
Wonder Man was a bit of a breath of fresh air when it dropped earlier this year. Certainly, it could never match the big screen spectacle of an Avengers flick, but the low stakes tale of perfectionist wannabe actor Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his reformed terrorist best mate, Trevor Slattery (MVP Ben Kingsley) navigating a Hollywood where people with superpowers are blacklisted was a fun exploration of a different corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It was fun enough for a second season, at least, with The Hollywood Reporter reportin’ that Disney+ will be bringing us the further adventures of Simon and Trevor in the not too distant future.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, as you’d hope and expect, along with co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton, whose Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due in July, and Andrew Guest (Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Cretton will be on directing duties for at least an episode or two, while Guest is showrunner and executive producer.
Of course, where Wonder Man goes in its second season is anyone’s guess, which I’ll explain in aa highly spoileriffic manner. The final episode of season one saw the central pair on the run, Abdul-Mateen’s Simon having used his considerable powers to bust Kingsley’s Trevor out of a maximum security Department Of Damage Control prison. With that in mind, we probably shouldn’t expect much more of the show’s gentle but pointed Hollywood satire, but you never can tell. In any case, let’s hope they find room for Joe Pantoliano again no matter what direction the series takes.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will next be seen in Netflix‘s Man On Fire, a remake of the 2004 Tony Scott action thriller of the same name starring Denzel Washington.
