Yellowjackets adds an 80s icon for its final season, as Molly Ringwald joins the cast.
Yellowjackets is drawing to close, with the upcoming fourth season set to be it’s last. But that doesn’t mean it can’t go out with a bang (or, given the show’s subject matter, a cannibal feast). Deadline is reporting that none other than Molly Ringwald, crimson-locked star of 80s teen classics 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty In Pink, is joining the cast as Vicky, the recently recovered alcoholic mother of Van (Lauren Ambrose, Liv Hewson).
For those who came in late, Yellowjackets follows the exploits of the titular girls’ soccer team after a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness forces them to throw a Donner party, at first resorting to and then reveling in some fairly gruesome acts of cannibalism. But that happens in 1996; in the modern day, the surviving socceristas have to contend with the consequences of their actions back in the day.
Over the past three seasons, Yellowjackets has drawn on a deep well of 90s nostalgia to dictate some of its casting choices, with Christina Ricci, Juliet Lewis, Hilary Swank, and Elijah Wood cropping up at various points. Ringwald’s casting draws from an earlier decade of pop culture, which makes sense. What we don’t know is whether she’ll be showing up in the series’ 90s or modern day timelines, and either is possible – or both! But if she shows up in the modern period, she’ll be contending with the death of her daughter, Van having been stabbed to death by Jenna Burgess’s Melissa at the tail end of season 3.
The fourth and final season of Yellowjackets has yet to begin principal photography, so don’t think for a second we have a release date yet. But we’ll be sure to let you know when we do.
