Yungblud drops iconic mashup featuring ‘Smoko’ by The Chats

Share

UK artist Yungblud is known for pushing the boundaries musically, so it should come as no surprise to any of us that his new offering is a mashup of his recent single ‘Weird!’ and The Chats’ Aussie anthem ‘Smoko’. The Aussie darlings were consulted by Yungblud on the cover in the video below, where frontman Eamon Sandwith gave his blessing.

“I promise you I’ll do it justice”, Yungblud pledged to Sandwith, and it seems that he fulfilled the commitment in the end. Sandwith seems unbothered of course, chilling in front of a Furphy logo and what looks suspiciously like a cardboard cutout of Pauline Hanson.

After making waves in both Aussie and international waters with ‘Smoko’, The Chats released their debut album High Risk Behaviour this year. Prior to the unveiling, we caught up with the boys to hear about their influences during a bout of record shopping at Sydney homebase Utopia Records.

On the other side of the pond, Yungblud could reasonably earn the title of king of the mashup. From mixing Camila Cabello’s ‘Señorita’ with Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ and tossing a slice of Travis Scott’s ‘Goosebumps’ in between, to effortlessly fusing Dua Lipa’s ‘New Rules’ with the aforementioned Cabello’s ‘Havana’, he’s kind of a big deal in the cover space.

Of course, the Brit-punk legend has earned success with his music in his own right. His last formal release was The Underrated Youth EP, which he dropped late last year prior to ‘Weird!’, his 2020 single. For extra points with the emos among us, he boasts plenty of collaborations with blink-182’s Travis Barker, including ‘11 Minutes‘, a co-credit with Halsey. If that wasn’t enough, Halsey and Yungblud also covered Death Cab for Cutie’s seminal tearjerker ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark‘ for triple j’s Like a Version.
