System Of A Down just played to 75,000 people in São Paulo, Brazil, and the footage that’s come out of it looks more like a war documentary than a rock concert.
And no — it wasn’t Lady Gaga this time. It was fire, flares, circle pits, and pure chaos… all from the air.
Drone footage from their May 14 set at the Autódromo de Interlagos has gone viral, showing an ocean of fans igniting red flares, opening up pits like sinkholes, and losing their collective minds as SOAD tore through their set. You can actually feel the heat coming off your screen.
“This is not a war zone, this is not a riot,” guitarist Daron Malakian posted. “This is a System Of A Down style Rock & Roll concert in Brazil!” Not subtle. Not wrong.
To be fair, the confusion’s understandable — the footage was so intense some fans online thought it was from Gaga’s Copacabana Beach show (which had, you know, a casual two million attendees). But no, this was SOAD — and Brazil showed up like their lives depended on it.
The band’s South American run has been a wild one. They kicked things off in Colombia in April, dropped rare deep cuts that hadn’t seen daylight in decades, and seem to be having more fun than we’ve seen in years. It’s the first time since 2017 they’ve actually committed to an extended run of shows — not just their usual “play one gig and vanish for 12 months” thing.
As for the rumours about new music, it’s still murky. Serj Tankian teased the idea of a “fresh start,” while Shavo Odadjian basically said, “don’t hold your breath.” Classic SOAD — always dangling the carrot, never quite delivering the meal.
But if that Brazil footage is anything to go by, they don’t need a new album to prove they’re still one of the most feral live bands on Earth. Watch the clips. Crank the volume. Try not to set anything on fire.
