The Dangerous Animals Trailer Offers Dangers More Deadly Than Sharks

Share

The Loved Ones director Sean Byrne brings us this tale of a shark-obsessed serial killer and the folks unfortunate enough to meet him.

Dangerous Animals offered an intriguing hook: a serial killer who uses sharks as his means of murder. As in, he feeds people to ’em from his boat. There’s more to it than that, of course, but “guy feeds people to sharks” is the sizzle – you already know if you’re in the bag for this, and are gonna hit play on the trailer below.

Me, I’m in. I love shark movies.

The serial killer is, of course, Aussie Jai Courtney, a brilliant character actor who had the acute misfortune of being mistaken for a leading man for a few years, leading to abominations like Terminator Genisys and A Good Day to Die Hard. He was the best thing in Suicide Squad, though – arguably a low bat to clear, Margot Robbie excluded – and he seems to be in his element here as Tucker, a guy who approaches the act of feeding people to sharks with religious reverence.

The person on the menu is #vanlife free spirit Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone), a loner-with-a-past on a permanent surf safari who probably won’t be missed if she winds up in the belly of a fish. Except! She’s just hooked up with nice guy Moses (Josh Heuston of Dive Club, appropriately enough) and he’s keen to see if there was a spark. Even if it means tangling with a madman and his army of man-eaters.

This one comes to us from Australian director Sean Byrne, who gave us the cracking Prom Night horror The Loved Ones (2009) and the brilliant but criminally underseen The Devil’s Candy (2015), so it’s been a while between drinks. The script is by Nick Leper, who’s a bit of an unknown quantity, but his next film, Keeper, is directed by Osgood Perkins, who just gave us Longlegs and The Monkey, so that bodes well.

Dangerous Animals just had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival’s Director’s Fortnight, with its Australian premiere set for the Sydney Film Festival on June 6. Everyone else has to wait til June 12, when it goes wide in Australian cinemas. Until then, enjoy this poster:
