The comedian and pioneering podcaster is hanging up his microphone after 16 years.
Well, here’s something to take the wind out of your sails. Comedian Marc Maron, God’s own grumpy old guy, is pulling the plug on his acclaimed podcast, WTF With Marc Maron, after nearly 16 years.
Maron made the shock announcement in an interview with John Mulaney on the latest episode of WTF, later confirming it on social media.
Maron noted that it was a mutual decision between him and his producer, Brendan McDonald. “We both realized together that we were done. There was no convincing or pushback or arguing. We were done, and it’s OK for things to end.
“It really comes down to the fact that we have put up a new show every Monday and Thursday for almost 16 years, and we’re tired. We’re burnt out. And we are utterly satisfied with the work we’ve done.”
WTF kicked off in 2009 with an interview with fellow comic Jeff Ross. Begun during a flat patch in Maron’s comedy career and largely recorded in his garage, WTF became one of the most lauded podcasts of all time. Maron’s candid, conversational interview style attracted hundreds of high profile guests, peaking with then-President Barack Obama in 2015. His 2010 interview featuring Robin Williams became the first podcast episode inducted into the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
In a statement on his website and shared on social media, Maron assured fans that while WTF is ending, he’s nowhere near retiring.
“I’ll be around,” he wrote. “I’m looking forward to these fun and full months of final shows. I’ll be doing my standup, acting and hopefully enjoying life a bit. I’ve earned that.”
Maron’s new comedy series, Stick, co-starring Owen Wilson, premieres on Apple TV+ on June 4.
