Avril Lavigne and ex-husband Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 reunited onstage at Warped Tour DC for a surprise ‘In Too Deep’ performance.
Avril Lavigne brought Warped Tour nostalgia full circle during her headline set in Washington DC, reuniting with ex-husband Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 for a surprise run through the pop-punk anthem ‘In Too Deep’.
The moment happened on June 15 during the DC stop of the revived Vans Warped Tour, where Lavigne closed out the night with a stacked set of career-spanning hits. Eight songs in, she paused to bring a special guest onstage.
“What do you say we bring one of the OG Warped Tour bands back out here tonight to join me right now?” she asked the crowd. “I know they’re one of my favourite pop-punk bands, what about you? Let’s hear it for Deryck from Sum fucking 41!”
Whibley walked out to huge cheers and wasted no time making his presence felt. “Holy shit, god damn. I thought I fucking quit music,” he joked. “But how the fuck can I miss the Warped Tour right? I’ve come out of my three- or four-month retirement for two reasons: to be with the Warped Tour family, and to be with the one, the only, the motherfucking princess.”

Backed by Lavigne’s band, the pair launched into Sum 41’s 2001 classic ‘In Too Deep’, a track that helped define Warped Tour’s golden years.
The performance marked a rare joint appearance for the former couple, who were married from 2006 to 2010. It was also a full-circle moment for longtime fans of both artists, bringing early 2000s pop-punk energy back to the stage where it all started.
Sum 41 recently performed their final show in Toronto in January before calling it quits, while Lavigne’s Warped Tour sets have reignited anticipation for what comes next in her already storied run.
