The AFL Grand Final has become as much about who’s shredding on stage as who’s kicking goals — and if the rumour mill is to be believed, Foo Fighters could be the next band to take the MCG by storm.
According to Triple M’s Mark “Roo” Ricciuto, whispers from “AFL circles” suggest that Dave Grohl and co. are in the frame to headline the 2025 Grand Final entertainment slot. “It’s not a done deal,” Roo admitted. “But it’s a bloody good chance.” No confirmation yet from the league or the band’s camp, but the internet’s already foaming at the mouth.
And there’s weight behind it. Co-host Loz pointed out the band are locked in for a headline set at the Singapore Grand Prix the weekend after the Grand Final, meaning they’ll already be in the southern hemisphere — and ripe for a one-off Melbourne appearance. They’ve also announced a world tour for 2025, but Australia’s dates remain under wraps. I mean, you can pretty much connected the dots.
If true, it would mark a major win for rock fans after last year’s sparkle-heavy spectacle from Katy Perry, who rolled onto the MCG in a metallic convertible and belted out pop hits alongside national treasure Tina Arena. Robbie Williams, who lit up the ‘G in 2022, used his slot to hype his own tour — a play the Foos could easily replicate with Aussie dates teased post-GF.
Dave Grohl’s no stranger to stadium-level chaos, and the MCG’s 100,000-strong crowd would be the perfect pit for the Foo Fighters to detonate their anthems. ‘Everlong’, ‘The Pretender’, ‘Best of You’. I mean, imagine the ‘G shaking under that wall of sound.
It’s all speculation for now, but if the AFL wants a halftime show with actual teeth, booking the Foo Fighters would be a no-brainer. Stay tuned — and maybe hold off on your Grand Final barbecue plans. You might be screaming lyrics at the stage instead.
