A new report from Netflix says you should get in the locker, Poindexter.
According to Deadline, fully half of all Netflix subscribers are big ol’ weebs, consuming a steady diet of anime.
Netflix dropped the data this weekend at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, where the jokes write themselves. They noted that “…more than 50 percent of its members — amounting to over 150 million households, or an estimated 300 million viewers — now watch anime” and that viewership of anime has tripled in the past five years. Apparently, anime was viewed over 1 billion times worldwide in 2024 – a chilling statistic.

Having divined that such a huge and growing swathe of their audience are unwashed weebs, Netflix made some programming announcements designed to appeal to that sticky demographic. Among them:
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which you can get an early look at here.
- Sakamoto Days, an action comedy about a hitman trying to retire quietly to the suburbs. Season one is already up.
- Stop-motion series My Melody & Kuromi on July 24.
- Record of Ragnarok III
- Beastars Final Season
- The Summer Hikaru Died
- The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
Those titles mean nothing to me, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners aside. That last one could be a love story or some kind of soul-destroying J-horror – it could go either way.
But seriously, it’s good news for weeaboos, and I only used the insult because I can’t resist a rhyme. In addition to the above, we’re also getting a second serving of the excellent Blue Eye Samurai. The next season of Amber Noizumi and Michael Green’s Edo era revenger sees wandering sword-swinger Mizu (Maya Erskine) hunting for two of her targets “…somewhere in this magical place called London” according to Noizumi. Guess we have some cross-cultural killing to look forward to.
