Ice Nine Kills Drop New ‘The Matrix’ Inspired Music Video

Ice Nine Kills have released a brand-new sci-fi inspired single ‘The Great Unknown’ taking inspiration from ‘The Matrix’.

Ice Nine Kills takes the red pill (in a Matrix way, not a Reddit way) in their new track ‘The Great Unknown’, taking inspiration from the Wachowskis’ iconic 90s sci-fi flick

Breaking from their usual horror-movie roots, Ice Nine Kills (INK) are giving themselves a tech-inspired makeover. For this new era, INK is inviting fans to enter the ‘INKverse’, asking them to “follow the white rabbit into ‘The Great Unknown or choose the blissful ignorance of The Matrix”.

The song itself is classic Ice Nine Kills, with electronic elements thrown in, such as glitchy production effects and a gun-turret breakdown. These all serve as a canvas to allow singer Spencer Charles to croon about feeling disconnected from reality.

Many eyebrows were raised when the band used AI-generated content on their social media platforms to promote merchandise. Even promotional material for the song has a bit of a GenAI look to it. However, with the release of the song, Charles reveals he’s actually an AI-powered manifestation of ‘metal spirit’. Does that excuse the use of Gen AI as promotional material over hiring an actual artist? You be the judge.

Charles is taking this a step further, adopting a robotic and cold persona in a statement about the new Ice Nine Kills track. “‘The Great Unknown’ optimises aggression and melody in a format our core user base consistently engages with,” explained Charles.

“This audio file represents a genre expansion protocol, targeting action and sci-fi verticals proven effective via cross-platform sentiment analysis. ‘The Great Unknown’ is designed to seamlessly interface with current simulation conditions, as categorical boundaries between fact and fiction, organic and synthetic, continue to experience accelerated erosion.” Reading this sure does activate my monkey neurons.

The full music video is the real treat here, though. ‘The Great Unknown’ features Charles as a stand-in for Keanu Reeves. Hacking into servers, slow-mo kung fu, meeting Morpheus, he does it all. There are plenty of easter eggs and lore continuations for fans of Ice Nine Kills as well, which should be a treat to those closely following the saga.

Charles also gets to flex his film nerd-dom, as the clip features Joel David Moore reprising his role as a Neo-obsessed fan from the film Grandma’s Boy. The official music video also features cameos from Terry Kiser and Bill Moseley.

While some fans might be disappointed that the band is moving away from its slasher-film roots, this new sci-fi era still has that classic Ice Nine kills metal theatre-kid energy. So, sit back, relax and enter the rabbit hole at your own risk.
