To celebrate 50 years of Triple J has asked listeners to vote for their favourite Aussie songs. Here’s what Australia voted for.
The Triple J 2025 Hottest 100 Australian songs has just started, showcasing some of Australia’s best homegrown music released over the years.
This special edition mid-year poll is “dedicated to the homegrown artists and tracks that have resonated across generations, and helped define our nation’s sound,” read a statement from the ABC-operated broadcaster.
The national youth broadcaster announced the launch of its Hottest 100 of Australian Songs in June, part of the network’s 50th birthday celebrations. Voting opened on June 17 and closed exactly a month later. According to the ABC, hundreds of thousands of Australians cast their votes for the competition, so you can be sure it’s going to be a tight race between some tracks.
Listeners can tune in to the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs on Triple J, Double J, Unearthed, and Triple J Hottest. Additionally, Triple J’s TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube channels will provide real-time updates and insights into the countdown, ensuring fans stay informed about all the latest developments. Additionally, the broadcaster is sharing some interesting golden nuggets of trivia about the tracks and their history in Australia.
Triple J’s Hottest 100 began in 1989, with Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ claiming the top spot. 36 years later, the Hottest 100 has become a staple Australian institution and is often described by the ABC as the world’s largest music democracy.
This year’s hottest 100 spot was claimed by breakout pop-artist Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!”, which broke records, raking in nearly 2.5 million votes.
Of course, with such a winning formula, Triple J have run multiple different iterations to get listeners keen to share their favourite music. These have included the Hottest 100 Songs of All Time in 2009, Australian Albums in 2011, Songs of the Decade in 2020, and more.
For this list, voters could only select tracks from Australian artists. You could vote for Aussie songs that featured international artists, for example, “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX. However, Young Franco, EARTHGANG & Jafunk’s ‘Lose Control’ was a no-go.
Similarly, Live A Version tracks were also barred from the list.
In the lead-up to the big weekend, the Blunt team shared our picks for the top 10 best Australian songs. Many arguments were had and glaring omissions were made, but we still stand by our list. You can check our lists out here.
The broadcast will run all day and is expected to reveal the number one winner sometime around 8 pm.
INXS has claimed the top spot in the countdown. Check out all the other picks below.
