Things Get Barbaric In The 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Trailer

Ralph Fiennes goes pagan in the hotly anticipated apocalyptic adveture.

28 Years Later whipped an unholy amount of ass, and if you don’t believe me, I prepared some remarks earlier for your edification.

Rather than keep us waiting for a follow up, the good folks behind the film have a fanged out a sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, in record time, a feat made possible by director Danny Boyle handing the reins over to Nia DaCosta.

DaCosta’s a really good choice, to my mind. Never mind The Marvels – I doubt anyone could have prevented that train wreck. But her Candyman was a banger, and her earlier work, Little Woods, shows she’s got a keen eye for community and personal dynamics, and that’s a big theme in 28 Years Later.

But never mind that: the real juice here is revered British thesp Ralph Fiennes going full berserker. How? Why? No idea. But just look at the mad bastard go.

What’s the plot?

Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later – but turning that world on its head – Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.

Who’s in it?

  • Alfie Williams as Spike, Jamie’s son.
  • Ralph Fiennes as Dr Ian Kelson, former doctor now… ascetic pagan weirdo?
  • Jack O’Connell as cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal.
  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, a scavenger in search Spike.
  • Erin Kellyman as cult member Jimmy Ink.
  • Emma Laird as Jimmima.
  • Maura Bird as Jimmy Jones.
  • Ghazi Al Ruffai as Jimmy Snake.
  • Connor Newall as Jimmy Shite.
  • Robert Rhodes as Jimmy Jimmy.
  • Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson, an absolute unit of an infected.
  • Cillian Murphy as Jim! Hooray! Ol’ Cheekbones is back!

When’s it out?

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is in cinemas from January 15, 2026.

What’s the vibe?

I’m completely jazzed for this one. The big hook for me in 28 Years Later was the way it built up a picture of the world after the Rage Virus, so any chance to explore that further, I’m gonna jump on. And we’ve got the third film from Danny Boyle himself to look forward to down the track, too.
