The Gorillaz have shared their new single, ‘The Manifesto’, taken from their upcoming ninth album, The Mountain, which is set to be released in March 2026.
The new single features Argentine rapper Trueno and a posthumous verse from Proof of D-12. Older Gorillaz fans may already be aware that D-12 actually featured on the Gorillaz track ‘911’ from the Bad Company soundtrack, released in 2001.
The new track clocks in at a lengthy seven minutes. The first half is a floatier and more upbeat track compared to the previous ‘The Happy Dictator’. It does, however, take a more pensive turn halfway through, as Proof’s verse turns the song on its head.
It’s exciting to see 20+ years into their band’s life, the Gorillaz are still experimenting with different sounds and song structures.
You can listen to the track below.
The Mountain is set to be a return to form for the band, with frontman David Albarn promising it to be the closest album to 2010’s Plastic Beach.
The ninth album was produced by Gorillaz, James Ford, Remi Kabaka Jr. and Samuel Egglenton. Argentine producer Bizarrap also contributed to select tracks on the album. Tracks were primarily recorded at Albarn’s Studio 13 in London, as well as at locations in Mumbai, New Delhi, Rajasthan, and Varanasi, India; Ashgabat, Turkmenistan; Damascus, Syria; Los Angeles; Miami; and New York.
As always, the new album is also set to have an impressive list of collabs mirroring its globetrotting recording locations. Idles, Kara Jackson, Yasiin Bey, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Black Thought of The Roots, Anoushka Shankar, and Omar Souleyman are all set to appear throughout the album.
Albarn would also share that the album would feature posthumous recordings from a variety of deceased figures, including Bobby Womack, Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, actor Dennis Hopper, the Fall’s Mark E. Smith, Detroit rapper Proof, and Tony Allen.
In an interview with BB2, Albarn would admit this is part of the narrative of The Mountain and the next chapter for the fictional band. The drummer of the band, Russel, will play an essential part in exploring the primary theme of death on the album, calling on the voices of the dead.
The Mountain is set to release March 20, 2026. You can check out the full tracklist and collaborations here.
