Flying in the face of the established Game Of Thrones tone, this actually looks fun.
Game Of Thrones may be over but the franchise keeps franchising, despite the general consensus being that the last season (or two or three) was absolute trash. House Of Dragons certainly has it fans, even though all those white wigs make telling most of the characters apart a challenge, and George RR Martin keeps promising/threatening to finish the book series as soon as he gets around to it. Now we can add the upcoming prequel series A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms to the teetering pile of GoT media, as our first decent look at the show has arrived.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Trailer
What’s the plot?
As the stirring prose of the official synopsis tells us:
A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.
The actual hook, as readers of the source stories that Martin has been writing instead of finishing the goddamn novels already know, is that little Egg is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen, who winds up king of the whole shebang at some point between the time of the series and the events of Game of Thrones. So we’ve got a lowborn but stout-hearted hedge knight and his squire, the most important person on the planet. Should be fun!

What’s the vibe?
Anyone else getting A Knight’s Tale vibes off of this one? It probably won’t be as funny, mind you. Still, this seems much less grimdark than the usual GoT material at first taste. That could either widen the appeal a bit or alienate extant fans who have grown accustomed to a televisual diet of rape and murder, it’s hard to say.
