The ultimate Tool challenge has been defeated this week by YouTube drummer Tyler Visser, who performed all of the band’s discography in one take.
In what may be the wildest drum challenge I’ve ever seen on YouTube, drumming content creator Tyler Visser has done what should have been impossible and performed all of Tool‘s discography in one setting.
That’s right, someone sat down and played all 59 tracks of Tool’s discography and performed those songs to near-perfection. I’m not even sure Danny Carey would take on the task himself.
The video was uploaded on October 10 and has since amassed over 160,000 views online.
“I want to thank my family and friends for the endless support! I also want to thank everyone else for taking the time to share this experience with me,” Visser would write in the caption.
“I have definitely gained a greater level of appreciation for the compositional work of Danny Carey and TOOL. Although I do not do Danny complete justice, being able to move past mistakes is something I learned. While I wish I could go back to fix things, I also feel a sense of accomplishment in being able to complete something that was once just an idea.”
You can watch the full video and feel insignificant in comparison to Visser’s talent below.
Visser has been gearing up for this video over the past year and livestreamed himself attempting the challenge multiple times, but has finally managed to pull off the challenge.
Visser would note that he did, unfortunately, have to leave two songs out due to YouTube’s notably tricky copyright policies. “I want to note that only songs with percussive elements were included. Sweat and Disgustipated were not included for copyright reasons.”
Regardless, it’s still a mighty feat for the 19-year-old drummer and makes for one hell of an audition tape for any tour gig job out there.
“Imagine playing for SIX HOURS straight and then you have to play ‘Pneuma’,” one commenter would write. Yeah, I’d rather not imagine playing ‘Pneuma’ at all if I could help it. Not even the famed Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater wanted to take on the task, famously saying, “This isn’t a song, it’s a mathematical equation”, and joked “…Danny Carey, lose my number! I don’t want the gig.”
Either way, I’m keen to see Visser pop up in a Drumeo video very soon, breaking down the challenge and how he learned all of the tracks.
Tool will be making their way down to Australia very soon for Good Things Festival and a string of headline shows in Adelaide and Perth, where you’ll be able to see Danny Carey himself perform these beasts of tracks live.
