One of Australia’s most colourful criminals, the Postcard Bandit, is the subject of a new miniseries.
As a refugee from Western Australia, it behooves me to big up the works of local kids done good. “Good” is doing a lot of heavy lifting when you’re talking about Brenden Abbott, the notorious postcard bandit: armed robber, prison escapee, and guy who never actually sent postcards to the cops, despite his nickname. Abbott already got the TV movie treatment way back in 2003, but now he’s getting a whole miniseries telling – and arguably lionising – his exploits.
Run Trailer
What’s the plot?
We really only have Wikipedia and the official synopsis to guide us, which says, rather succinctly:
The extraordinary life of Australia’s most notorious bank robber, Brenden Abbott, is dramatized in this action-packed series about his unprecedented career in crime and chaotic life on the run.
Casting a critical eye over the trailer, Run seems like a heightened account of the Postcard Bandit’s exploits, and on the spectrum of Australian crime that runs from “funny” to “grim”, this seems to well toward the latter.
Who’s in it?
George Mason (The Power of the Dog, The Survivors) stars as Brenden Abbott, with Robyn Malcolm (After The Party, The Survivors), Ashleigh Cummings (Citadel, Long Bright River, Hounds of Love), and Keiynan Lonsdale (Swift Street, The Flash).
In support we’re getting David Howell (Narrow Road to the Deep North, Strife), Mia Artemis (Sweet Tooth, The Secrets She Keeps), Christian Byers (Bump, The Narrow Road to the Deep North), Roxie Mohebbi (He Had It Coming, Critical Incident), Oscar Redding (Top of the Lake, The Twelve), Anthony Hayes (Mystery Road, Gold, The Twelve), Jayden Popik (Mystery Road, A Perfect Pairing) and Lee Tiger Halley (Boy Swallows Universe, Beast of War).
When’s it out?
All six episodes of Run will be available to stream from Thursday 1 January on Binge and Foxtel, and will premiere on Showcase at 8.30pm.
What’s the vibe?
Looks like a good time to me, although how closely it cleaves to the facts of the actual case is anyone’s guess. Funnily enough, some friend of the people has chucked the old TV movie up on YouTube, so have at it:
