TOOL Good Things Festival Brisbane Gallery

TOOL took Good Things Festival Brisbane by storm last night with an intense set that had the crowd entranced. We were there to capture it all.

There’s something special about seeing TOOL live, and Good Things Festival Brisbane attendees got to be a part of the magic on Sunday night as the prog metal icons (if we can even pin them down to just one clear-cut genre) closed out a three day festival run across the east coast.

Kicking off with ‘Stinkfist’ and accompanied by the kind of mind-bending imagery fans have come to expect, TOOL had the crowd fully entranced from the opening moments. As expected, the set was technically tight, intense, and filled to the brim with the notoriously long song runtimes that are enough to put even the most casual fan into a trance.

After a long, hot day, Good Things punters were tired, sweaty, and probably trying to work out the best spot to catch an Uber that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg and take an hour to arrive (spoiler: they probably still did). Despite it all, the crowd was immense and truly in the moment – even if plenty of them were holding up phones despite Maynard James Keenan’s well-documented aversion to a sea of phone camera lights amongst the audience.

There’s really not much you can say about seeing TOOL live that hasn’t been said before – they’re a must-see act, even if you’ve not been a fan of them previously. There’s something transcendent about their performances, even when at times the music and vibes can become almost overwhelmingly (and we don’t mean this negatively, despite the connotations). For those who stuck around towards the end of their Good Things headlining set, especially the die-hard fans, they were treated to deep cuts that up until their Australian run of sideshows and festival performances hadn’t been played live for many moons. ‘Crawl Away’ in particular had been vaulted for almost 27 years before their Perth show last week, but made its way onto the setlist for every festival instalment over the weekend.

Here’s TOOL’s Good Things Brisbane setlist:

  1. Stinkfist
  2. Rosetta Stoned
  3. Fear Inoculum
  4. The Grudge
  5. H.
  6. Jambi
  7. Pneuma
  8. Crawl Away
  9. Invincible
  10. Vicarious
