Derry may now be a regular destination for horror fans, with producer Barbara Muschietti hinting that a third movie may be on the cards.
It: Chapter Three is certainly being talked about as a possibility. That’s according Barbara Muschietti, producer of It and It: Chapter 2, co-creator of It: Welcome To Derry, and sister of It director Andy Muschietti. So, she really oughtta know.
Muschietti talked about the possibility of another chapter in the story, following the wild success of the two part cinematic adaptation of Stephen King‘s gruesome doorstopper, plus the Welcome To Derry series, which expanded the backstory behind all the spooky goings-on in the quiet little Derry, Maine. When the titular creature, played by Bill Skarsgård when in the guise of the malevolent clown, Pennywise, shows up in Welcome To Derry, he kinda sorta hints that maybe his death down the track at hands of the Losers Club wasn’t – or won’t be – a death so much as a rebirth. Which fans and journos alike have pounced on as allowing for the possibility of another film.
Muschietti responded to the question in an interview over on ScreenRant, and it’s clear from her answer that the possibility of a third chapter has definitely come up.
“We shall see. It’s a universe. It is a universe, and there are characters that are still fascinating. There are more gaps. When the great Stephen King wrote the book, I think that he left those holes on purpose. And if he didn’t do it on purpose, they’re just as great. They’re great accidents, but for us, they are a wonder. In doing the first season, of course, we uncovered a lot of holes. And also, of course, we [the Muschietti siblings] read the book for the first time when we were 14 and 15, and now we are 52 and 53. We’re parents, and the perspective changes all the time. So, I don’t know. I don’t think this is the end, basically, is all I’ll say.”
Of course, given Pennywise only wakes up every 27 years to feed on the fear of Derry’s children, there are some questions vis a vis how it’s return might work chronologically, but that’s a pretty simple conceptual problem to solve. Or they could give us glimpse of Derry’s grim, cyberpunk future – that would be cool, too. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
