The Mummy 4 Is A Goer As Brendan Fraser And Rachel Weisz Sign On

Share

The Mummy returns 25 years on from The Mummy Returns, as original stars Fraser and Weisz say yes Radio Silence.

We’re getting another Mummy movie! No, not Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, although that is still heading our way, as previously reported. But prior to the teaser for that one dropping we also reported that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were in talks to reprise the roles of square-jawed, wise-cracking, all-American hero Rick O’Connell and bespectacled, feisty, librarian-adventurer Evelyn Carnahan for a legacy sequel to the Mummy franchise, the ship that launched a thousand sexual awakenings around the turn of the century (I’m given to understand these flicks are very important to the bisexual community).

Well, those talks are turning into action, presumably of the two-fisted variety, with Deadline reporting that the pair have signed on the dotted line and will join the cast of the upcoming and as-yet-untitled fourth Mummy movie. Original director Stephen Sommers is not returning, sadly – he seems to still be in Director Jail since 2013’s barely remembered Dean Koontz adaptation, Odd Thomas. But we do have Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence Productions, the guys behind Ready Or Not and Abigail, taking up the directorial reins, so glass half full, I say.

This will mark the first time Fraser has played O’Connell since 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, and the first time Weisz has played Carnahan since 2001’s The Mummy Returns, Mario Bello having taken over the role for the third film.

Exactly how Fraser and Weisz’s characters are returning is anyone’s guess, but it needn’t be too complicated – they were alive and well when last we saw them, after all. No word as to whether John Hannah will return as Evelyn’s caddish brother, Jonathan, either, but there’s always a chance. I wouldn’t hold out much hope for Aussie actor Luke Ford reappearing as Rick and Evelyn’s kid, Alex, though. Nobody loved Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. They’ll Mutt Williams him without batting an eye, mark my words.
