Tool drummer Danny Carey has said he’s hopeful the band will release new music in 2027 and that the group are hard at work writing new material.
Yet another Tool member has shared an update on how the band is tracking with new music.
Speaking to Spiral Out Network, drummer Danny Carey has given a rare update on Tool’s writing sessions, revealing that the group is aiming for a 2027 release.
“Working on a lot of new Tool songs right now,” Carey would tell the host. “Hopefully, 2027, you know, that’s the goal.”
The prog metal giants have been known for their long gaps between albums, keeping fans literally counting the days. So much so that fans would compare the 13-year gap between 10,000 Days and the eventual fifth album, Fear Innoculum, to George R.R Martin’s sixth Game of Thrones book, Winds of Winter.
Carey would also share that the band have been eyeing a residency at the Las Vegas sphere, with the aim of bringing their psychedelic live shows to the venue.
“We’re hoping when we release a new record,” he remarked, “maybe do a stand at the Sphere ’cause I think we’re perfect for that. We’ve been talking to those guys.”
“The preparation is pretty intense to get everything up,” he continued. “It’s a very expensive endeavour, and it takes a while to get into the black. I think it’s quite a few shows before you make any money.”
Fellow bandmate Justin Chancellor has also spoken about Tool’s writing sessions, cautioning fans that while progress is underway, they don’t want to promise a date.
“Art doesn’t really have a schedule. You can’t force it… it’s a different kind of alchemy,” Chancellor would say.
“I don’t know when we’re gonna finish it. We’ve been working on stuff, on and off, for a couple of years.”
Chancellor would also add, in a separate interview last year, that they intend to dive deep into the new record after returning from their European tour, which wrapped in the back half of 2025.
“When we’re done with Europe, we’re gonna dive back in during the second half of the year.” Chancellor would then share an Instagram post with the caption “Vacation is over…” alluding to the fact that more writing sessions were taking place.
While fans would be right to maintain some level of hype, anyone who was around for the drip feed of information that came out between 10,000 Days to Fear Innoculum knows not to take the band at their word.
Throughout the 13-year gap, the band would at multiple points reveal that their next album would be released soon, years before it would eventually be released.
That said, it wouldn’t be a Tool album rollout without countless teases along the way. Here’s hoping the band stay true to their word and eventually releases new music they’re proud of soon. I don’t know if I have it in me to go another 13 years this time around.
