NOLA King is now Frisco King as Samuel L. Jackson’s Taylor Sheridan series get retooled.
Everyone wants to work with reigning King Of Television Taylor Sheridan, and that includes gloriously foul-mouthed screen legend Samuel L. Jackson.
The Yellowstone creator and the Pulp Fiction star first collaborated in season three of the Sylvester Stallone-starring Tulsa King, in which Jackson played the ageing assassin Russell Lee Washington Jr., an old friend of Stallone’s old school mob boss, Dwight “The General” Manfredi. That went so well for all concerned that a spin-off was hastily cobbled together under the title NOLA King, Jackson’s Washington hailing from New Orleans. But apparently that has changed.
As per Deadline, original showrunner and pilot screenwriter Dave Erickson has departed due to pressing duties on both Tulsa King and Mayor Of Kingstown, another of Sheridan’s seemingly endless roster of shows. Following his departure, Taylor Sheridan himself will write all eight episodes of the series, which has now been completely retooled to the point that it’s now set in Frisco, Texas, and has a new title: Frisco King. Whether anyone anticipates any confusion stemming from the existence of the other, bigger, way more well known Frisco in California remains a mystery at the time of writing.
Sheridan does tend to keep a tight rein on his productions, so this all makes a certain kind of sense. While he’s only co-written the pilot episode of Tulsa King (well, according to the credits – there’s a good chance he’s taken a pass at more), he’s written the bulk of his produced shows so far, including the first season of Yellowstone, all of spinoffs 1883 and 1923, along with all of Lioness and Landman so far. As to whether this hints at deeper production issues? Well, it does look like a massive restructure from the outside looking in, at least.
Casting for the series is currently underway, with principal photography scheduled for a March state on Forth Worth, Texas. The fourth season of Tulsa King is also currently in the works.
