Hilltop Hoods are set to receive a permanent tribute in their hometown, with the City of Adelaide announcing plans to rename Clubhouse Lane as Hilltop Hoods Lane.
The laneway sits just off Hindley Street in the Adelaide CBD, and the official unveiling is expected to take place later this year, the honour recognises the massive influence the trio have had on Australian hip-hop and the broader local music scene, while also celebrating their deep connection to South Australia (per Rolling Stone Australia).
A hometown honour for Australian hip-hop pioneers
Raised in the Adelaide Hills, Hilltop Hoods formed in the late 1990s while they were still teenagers, the group, made up of Suffa (Matt Lambert), Pressure (Dan Smith), and DJ Debris (Barry Francis), helped push Australian hip-hop from a small underground movement into a national force.
Over the past two decades the trio have built one of the most successful careers in Australian music, scoring seven ARIA No. 1 albums, selling more than one million records, and becoming a regular presence on festival stages and arena tours both at home and overseas.
The laneway dedication places Hilltop Hoods alongside other South Australian icons recognised through Adelaide’s City of Music Laneways program.
Joining Adelaide’s musical landmarks
Hilltop Hoods will become the sixth act honoured through the initiative, joining a list that already includes Sia, Cold Chisel, Paul Kelly, No Fixed Address and The Angels.
Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the recognition reflects the band’s journey from playing small local venues to reaching global audiences:
“It seemed fitting to add the band to our cavalcade of City of Music Laneways as they prepare to shake stages across the country, with their current national arena tour underway this month.”
Hilltop Hoods respond to the tribute
For the group themselves, the honour carries extra meaning given their history with the city:
“We love our city and this gesture just connects us even further to the place that we call home,” Suffa said.
The announcement arrives while Hilltop Hoods continue their ‘Never Coming Home’ national arena tour, supporting last years ‘Fall From the Light’ album, the record delivered the group’s seventh ARIA No. 1, reinforcing their position as one of Australia’s most enduring and successful hip-hop acts.
From early shows at venues like the Worldsend Hotel and Adelaide UniBar to headlining arenas across the country, the band’s journey has become a blueprint for artists coming out of South Australia.
Soon, it’ll also be written directly into the streets of Adelaide.
