David Dastmalchian Leeches Off His Daughter In The Cure Trailer

Share

“Billionaires are parasites” becomes literal as David Dastmalchian harvests his adopted kid’s blood in The Cure.

Surely our collective cultural memories aren’t so short and occluded that you’ve forgotten about Bryan Johnson, the venture capitalist so afraid of death he embarked on a ridiculous anti-ageing program that involved, among other things, injecting his son’s blood plasma? No? Well, you’ve gotta admit it’s a hell of a concept for a horror movie, and you’re not alone there. Genre perennial David Dastmalchian (The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Late Night With The Devil) obviously thinks so, too, as he’s front and centre in this upcoming slice of creepiness.

What’s the plot?

Directed by Nancy Leopardi and written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer (Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane – guess they’re our go-to medical thriller guys), The Cure follows adopted teen Ally Braun, a girl with a mysterious illness who slowly twigs that bio-tech billionaire parents (Dastmalchian and Greene) are harvesting her blood for nefarious purposes. So, we’re in sci-fi horror territory here, one of my favourite genre hybrids, personally. Reading between the lines, there may be something not quite human about young Ally, but we’re gonna have to wait to see if I’m on the money about that one.

Who’s in it?

  • David Dastmalchian as Jeff Braun, medtech billionaire and obviously the bad guy.
  • Ashley Greene as Georgia Braun, his wife.
  • Samantha Cochran as Ally Braun, their adopted daughter.
  • Tyler Lawrence Gray as Robbie Amandine.
  • Sydney Taylor as Brooke Amandine.
  • Dylan Flashner as Dr. Morrissey.
  • Alex Veadov as Dr. Volker.

When’s it out?

The Cure hits cinemas on April 13 in North America, so expect it around the same time locally.

What’s the vibe?

Certainly intriguing, that’s for sure – there’s a nice, creepy atmosphere in the trailer, and I’m always up for an eat-the-rich horror flick – a burgeoning subgenre at the moment. Director Nancy Leopardi described the film as “a satirical take on the modern billionaire class cloaked in a crowd-pleasing thriller”, so I’d say The Cure fits the bill perfectly.
