Jack White has admitted in a new interview that he finds it “boring” to write about himself. He’d go on to say that Taylor Swift’s way of writing autobiographical songs about their public break-ups “isn’t something I find interesting at all”.
Legendary guitarist Jack White has shared that he has no intention of writing lyrics about himself in a new interview with The Guardian.
White would sit down with the outlet this week to discuss his recently released book, Jack White: Collected Lyrics & Selected Writing Volume 1. The frontman would also admit that Taylor Swift‘s way of writing about high-profile break-ups wasn’t for him.
During the interview, White would be asked if any of his songs are autobiographical, which he would quickly rebuke.
“Not too much. Now it’s become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired break-ups, which I don’t find interesting at all,” he’d admit.
“I think it’s a little bit boring for me to write about myself. Even if I’ve had a really interesting day, I feel like I’ve already lived that, I don’t need to go through it every time I sing this song. If it’s something really painful, I’m not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over.”
“So I put a percentage of that into what I do and then morph it into somebody else’s character. I can’t really learn about myself until I put it into somebody else’s shoes.”
The interviewer would then ask White if he had any recurring characters throughout his music, to which White would admit that he does; however, they’re all imaginary.
He’d go on to explain that he finds it valuable to explore different perspectives with characters and imagine how they’d react to different things. “Real wisdom comes from admitting you don’t know anything and other people might have an answer you’ve never thought of.”
White’s new book, Jack White Collected Lyrics and Selected Writing Vol 1 Standard Edition released last month and covers every song the former White Stripes frontman has written outside the band, as well as a collection of poems, notebook scans and notes from Instagram.
“I wanted to test the waters about doing a full book of my poetry and writings,” he said about sharing the book. “I was a little bit worried about that being taken the wrong way. It’s tough when you say the word poetry out loud. People can immediately think there’s a pretension to it.”
White is also expected to debut a new visual art show in London’s Damien Hirst Newport Street Gallery. These Thoughts May Disappear will run from May 29 until September 13.
