Spanish Embassy Issues Statement Mocking Morrissey For Cancelling Show Over “Sleep Deprivation”

Share

The Spanish embassy has responded to Morrissey’s cancelling his shows due to “festival noise” causing him “sleep deprivation”: “Fallas is noise, fireworks… and there is a light that never goes out!”

Following news that the former The Smiths frontman Morrissey has cancelled a show yet again, the Spanish embassy has issued a statement mocking the singer.

News of Morrissey’s cancellation would break on Thursday (March 12) through a post on Morrissey Central, which would read:

“Having travelled for two days by road, Morrissey reached the hotel in Valencia late on Wednesday. Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise / loud techno singing / megaphone announcements. This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state. Before leaving for tonight’s scheduled concert, please check that the show remains possible under these circumstances.”

The loud noise being referred to here is the Las Fallas festival in Valencia, a famous traditional festival.

A second post would shortly follow, clarifying that the cancellation was inevitable:

“Tonight’s scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation. Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.

“The show is not cancelled. Circumstances render the show impossible.”

A surprising third post would appear later, with Morrissey saying that staying at a hotel in the Plaza Manises area was an “indescribable hell”, adding: “It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement.”

The incident would go viral, in part thanks to Pitchfork’s reporting with the headline ‘Morrissey cancels show because he is sleepy‘. Now, the Spanish embassy itself has jumped on the bandwagon.

Posting on X / Twitter, the Embassy would share footage of the Las Fallas celebrations along with the caption, “The Fallas Festival in Valencia has already begun, and we have had our first casualty. Morrisey has cancelled his show because he couldn’t sleep.”

The post would then continue, naming one of The Smiths’ seminal tracks: Fallas is noise, fireworks… and there is a light that never got out! Enjoy today’s mascletá!”

Morrissey’s cancellation of concerts is no surprise to long-time fans. Last year, the singer would cancel a string of shows due to “extreme exhaustion”. He would then follow up by announcing even more cancellations, some of which were make-goods for previous shows he had cancelled in the past.

Morrissey is expected to play at the SpainCartuja Center in Seville on March 16. It’s unclear if the show will move forward as intended, but given the singer’s track record, fans shouldn’t hold their breath.
