Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ closed out its awards season run with four wins at the 2026 Oscars, capping off a remarkable year for the Southern vampire drama that arrived at the ceremony with a record breaking 16 nominations.
The film didn’t take home Best Picture, but its victories still marked several major milestones, including Coogler’s first Oscar win and a historic cinematography victory (per Hollywood Reporter).
Ryan Coogler finally takes home an Oscar
Coogler won Best Original Screenplay, officially becoming an Academy Award winner after years of shaping some of the most influential films of the past decade, the filmmaker, known for titles like ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Creed’, wrote, directed and produced ‘Sinners’, a supernatural Southern drama that blends horror with social commentary.

The film had entered the ceremony with serious momentum, including a major ensemble win at the Actor Awards, but remained something of an underdog heading into the final Oscar voting.
Michael B. Jordan wins Best Actor
One of the night’s biggest surprises came when Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his role in the film, the performance marked Jordan’s first Oscar nomination, and his victory capped off a late awards season surge that pushed him into serious contention just weeks before the ceremony.

The win also continued the long running creative partnership between Jordan and Coogler, which has now spanned multiple films.
A historic win behind the camera
Another major moment arrived when Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography, becoming the first woman in Academy Awards history to win the category, the victory was considered a major upset after rival contender Michael Bauman had dominated the category during earlier awards ceremonies.

Ludwig Göransson adds another Oscar
The film’s fourth award went to composer Ludwig Göransson, who won Best Original Score.
It marks his third Oscar overall and his second for a film directed by Coogler, following his earlier win for ‘Black Panther’.

A huge run for original filmmaking
Even without a Best Picture win, ‘Sinners’ still finished the night as one of the most talked-about films of the ceremony, the film’s awards success followed a massive box office run, reinforcing the idea that big budget original stories can still break through in a franchise heavy Hollywood landscape.
Speaking earlier in the awards season, Coogler explained the mindset behind the film:
“I wanted people to know we were thinking about them. We were thinking about the audience on this movie every day. Sometimes it is nice to know that you were thought of.”
Judging by the film’s reception from audiences and voters alike, that message clearly landed.
