John Wick Spin Off Caine Starts Filming Next Month

John Wick may be dead but his franchise lives on as Donnie Yen returns as Chapter 4‘s blind assassin.

John Wick died at the end of 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, but Caine lived on. That’s Caine, the blind assassin played by martial arts god Donnie Yen, whose deep friendship with our mournful murder machine was somewhat complicated by the fact that he was honour bound to kill him (he didn’t as it turns out, but I have to assume you’ve seen the movie).

But Caine was cool was hell in both concept and execution, and word came last year that he’d be getting his own spin off movie. And while last year’s Ballerina only managed to drag itself into “it’s okay, I guess” territory, and everyone seems to have completely forgotten Prime Video’s three episode 2023 series, The Continental, Deadline is reporting that production on Caine kicks off next month, with Yen both starring and directing. The script is by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II) and Michael McGrale.

There’s not much in the way of plot details going around at the moment, but given that Rina Sawayama is reprising her Chapter 4 role of Akira, it will almost certainly involve her wanting revenge on Caine for killing her father in their last film together.

Speaking about the project, Yen said, “What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero. This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”
