VHS staple Faces Of Death is getting a remake that promises to be as upsetting as the original.
Faces Of Death – now there’s a blast from the gnarly past. Released in 1978, the mondo horror mockumentary managed to appall pretty much everyone but the most debased and jaded by combining staged scenes of death and mutilation with… well, real scenes of death and mutilation culled from news footage, autopsies, plane crashes, horrible accidents, and the like.
And now we’re getting a remake from director Daniel Goldhaber (Cam, How To Blow Up A Pipeline). Obviously, actual on screen deaths are not – we hope – being used in the new Faces Of Death, but this new promo clip promises plenty for the discerning gorehound to enjoy.
Faces Of Death Clip
What’s the plot?
As the official synopsis tells us:
Faces of Death continues the exploration of the original film’s infamous ‘Is it real or not?’ conceit, as a woman (Barbie Ferreira) working as a content moderator for a major video platform discovers what appears to be re-enactments of murders from the original film. In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fiction or unfolding in real time.
Who’s in it?
- Barbie Ferreira as Margot.
- Dacre Montgomery as Athur.
- Josie Totah.
- Aaron Holliday.
- Jermaine Fowler.
- Charli XCX as Gabby.
When’s it out?
Faces Of Death will premiere at Beyond Fest Chicago on April 5 before going wide in the US on April 10. It hasn’t shown up on any Australian release schedules as yet, but Shudder have the streaming rights so we’ll definitely be getting it sooner or later.
What’s the vibe?
I’m interested, but mainly because I want to see how Faces Of Death plays in a cultural landscape stuffed to the gills with real world atrocities and AI deepfakes. But Goldhaber seems to have a good head on his shoulders – I assume he’s got a smart angle, I just can’t see what it is yet.
