Ex-Turnstile Guitarist Brady Ebert Claims ‘Self-Defense’ After Alleged Incident Involving Brendan Yates’ Father

Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert is facing serious charges after allegedly striking Brendan Yates’ 79 year old father, William Yates, with a vehicle in Maryland.

The incident, which reportedly took place on March 29th, has now taken another turn, with Ebert claiming it was “pure self-defense.”

According to The Baltimore Banner, Ebert made the statement during a recent hearing with a Baltimore District Court Commissioner, insisting surveillance footage would clear him.

“I’m sorry, but this is pure self-defense. I was straight-up attacked.”

Court pushes back on ‘self-defense’ claim

Prosecutors aren’t buying it, during a bail hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Dominic Plantamura described the incident as “a clearly targeted attack.” Bail was denied, and Ebert remains in custody ahead of his next court appearance in May.

Police allege Ebert drove to the Yates family home in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he was seen honking his horn and yelling abuse, the situation escalated when he allegedly struck William Yates with his car, causing “severe trauma to both of his legs.” The 79 year old was taken to hospital for treatment.

Authorities also claim Ebert returned to the scene after the incident and told the victim he “deserved it.” He was arrested two days later, on March 31st.

A long running breakdown behind the scenes

For those who’ve followed Turnstile closely, this didn’t come out of nowhere. Ebert parted ways with the band in 2022 after ongoing internal issues, which reportedly led to peace orders being filed by his former bandmates.

In court testimony from that period, Brendan Yates outlined concerns around Ebert’s behaviour.

“Over the last couple years, his behavior has kind of elevated to a point, including heavy drug use and a lot of factors that have made him pretty unreliable. And with recent threats, we feel it’s for our safety to file this peace order to neutralize potential threats to our physical safety.”

Yates also alleged that Ebert had made threats involving violence and money, and had been seen near his home during early morning hours (per Metal Sucks).

Now, with criminal charges on the table, what was once internal band fallout has spilled into something far heavier, the case heads back to court in May.
