Dave Grohl has never been one to hold back, and during the Foo Fighters’ recent appearance on Hot Ones Versus, the frontman brutally roasted one of his own lyrics while sharing a hilarious story about a blunt exchange with the late David Bowie.
Grohl joined bandmates Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee and Ilan Rubin for the fiery challenge, where the group faced off while tackling spicy wings and answering increasingly revealing questions.
One of the standout moments came when Grohl was asked to name the Foo Fighters lyric he considers the most cringe worthy:
“Take your pick. I swear there’s so many I hate,” he admitted, before singling out a line from the band’s 2005 track DOA.
“That song ‘DOA,’” he said. “‘It’s a shame we have to die, my dear/ No one’s getting out of here alive.’ That’s so f–king stupid. That’s one of those I wrote because you guys were like, ‘Dave, sing something, anything.’”
Despite Grohl’s harsh self critique, DOA remains a fan favourite and became a notable chart success during the band’s In Your Honor era.

David Bowie exchange
Elsewhere in the episode, Grohl opened up about an unforgettable email exchange with David Bowie after attempting to recruit the legendary artist for a movie soundtrack collaboration (per Billboard):
“I asked him to collaborate on something,” Grohl recalled. “It was for a movie soundtrack. He said, ‘That’s not really my genre or thing. I’d love to do something, but I don’t think this is it.’”
Grohl explained that he politely thanked Bowie and left the conversation there, only to receive one final message from the icon.
“And I immediately got an email back that said, ‘Well, that’s settled then,’” Grohl said. “‘Now f–k off.’”
Watch the full episode below, it’s a super fun one:
The appearance comes as Foo Fighters continue promoting their latest album, Your Favorite Toy, which dropped in April and has already generated strong attention from fans.
The Hot Ones Versus episode showcased exactly why Grohl remains one of rock’s most relatable figures, equal parts self deprecating, sharp witted and never afraid to laugh at himself, even when it means publicly calling his own lyrics “so f–king stupid.”
