Share

Poppy is putting her own spin on a ‘90s alt-rock classic, officially releasing a cover of Alanis Morissette’s iconic hit “Hand In My Pocket”.

The track has arrived as part of a new tribute project celebrating Morissette’s massively influential 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, which has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and helped define an entire era of alternative music.

Poppy’s version appears on the soundtrack for Mile End Kicks, a new release from Sumerian Records and Sumerian Pictures that centres around an aspiring music journalist whose life becomes closely tied to Jagged Little Pill (per The PRP)

While the original “Hand In My Pocket” leaned into stripped back alternative rock with Morissette’s unmistakable vocals front and centre, Poppy’s take injects a darker and more atmospheric energy into the track while still preserving the song’s instantly recognisable hooks.

Originally released in 1995 as the second single from Jagged Little Pill, “Hand In My Pocket” became one of Morissette’s signature songs and a major radio success, the track topped the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached the top 10 in both Canada and New Zealand, further cementing Morissette’s breakout global success during the mid-90s alternative explosion.
