Former Misfits vocalist Michale Graves has spoken candidly about his spiritual journey, revealing how years of personal struggles ultimately led him to embrace Christianity and become what he describes as “born again.”
Appearing in a recent interview with CCM Magazine, Graves reflected on his upbringing, his time fronting the legendary horror punk outfit, and the difficult path that followed after leaving the band.
Raised in a Catholic household, Graves said faith was always present during his early years, although his relationship with religion shifted as he grew older and pursued a career in music (per Lambgoat).
“Well, I was raised in a Catholic household, so I always knew God,” Graves explained. “I had a relationship with Jesus for a good part of my life, really up until about my teenage years.”

A chaotic lifestyle
After joining Misfits in the 1990s, Graves found himself immersed in a lifestyle that he described as increasingly chaotic.
“I developed a taste for drugs, and my life just went out of control,” he said while discussing years marked by personal loss, addiction and an ongoing search for happiness.
According to Graves, a turning point came after spending time in Arkansas, where conversations about Christianity and hearing sermons from evangelist Billy Graham caused him to reassess his life and beliefs.
“My life got to a point where I [was at] the lowest of the low, and I found myself in a hotel room on my knees just calling out to Jesus. And I surrendered my life to Jesus and became born again. And here I am.”
Today, Graves says his focus is on reaching people who may feel disconnected, lost or struggling with their own challenges. While acknowledging that some Christian audiences have questioned his approach and musical style, he believes his background provides a unique opportunity to connect with people outside traditional faith communities.
“I go out and I’m talking to kids that are lost and that are hurt,” Graves said.
The singer added that hearing stories from fans who have found faith through his work has become one of the most meaningful aspects of this chapter of his life, describing those experiences as his greatest reward.
