Black Crowes Frontman Chris Robinson Sparks Backlash After Calling Out ‘U.S.A.’ Chant At Florida Show

Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson found himself at the centre of a heated moment during the band’s recent Florida concert after challenging audience members who broke into a loud “U.S.A.! U.S.A!” chant.

The incident unfolded during the band’s performance at Tampa’s MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre when the group’s longtime crow mascot appeared on screen dressed as Uncle Sam. The visual prompted sections of the crowd to begin chanting “U.S.A.”, with the noise growing louder as the band prepared to launch into the classic ballad “She Talks To Angels” (per Louder Sound).

Rather than ignoring the chant, Robinson stopped to address the crowd directly.

According to reports and fan filmed footage circulating online, the singer thanked the audience for the “geography lesson” before questioning the patriotic display.

“I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.”

The comment immediately divided the audience, with some fans cheering while others responded with loud boos.

As tensions rose, Robinson doubled down on his stance

“Some of us have real faith. For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant.”

The exchange quickly spread across social media, generating strong reactions from both supporters and critics. Some concertgoers reportedly left the venue following the confrontation, while others praised Robinson for speaking his mind.

The comments align with sentiments Robinson has expressed in recent interviews regarding his concerns about the current political climate in the United States. Earlier this year, the singer spoke openly about growing social and political tensions, questioning whether younger generations were engaged enough in addressing major issues facing society.

While the Tampa incident has become a flashpoint online, it is unlikely to derail the band’s busy touring schedule. The Black Crowes are currently in the middle of their extensive Southern Hospitality Tour, which continues across North America throughout the summer.

Australian fans also recently welcomed the band back to local stages during an April run that included performances in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. The Melbourne opening night at The Forum featured live debuts of new tracks “Profane Prophecy” and “Pharmacy Chronicles”, alongside fan favourites including “She Talks To Angels”, “Hard To Handle”, “Jealous Again” and “Remedy”.

Whether fans agreed with Robinson’s comments or not, the Tampa exchange ensured one thing: people are talking about The Black Crowes for more than just their music this week.
