Silent Planet have publicly criticised a European venue after claiming they were blocked from selling merchandise at one of their latest tour stops.
California metalcore outfit Silent Planet who are currently touring across Europe, took to social media ahead of their June 9th performance in Milan, Italy, revealing they would not be selling merchandise at the city’s Alcatraz venue due to what they described as excessive fees and taxes (per Lamb Goat).
Merchandise sales have become an increasingly important revenue stream for touring artists, particularly when navigating rising travel, accommodation and production costs. According to the band, the venue’s conditions would have made selling merchandise financially unsustainable.
In a statement shared with fans, Silent Planet explained the situation:
“Tonight’s venue in Milan is not allowing us to sell our own merch, and demanding a 25% gross vendor fee (merch rate) and an additional 22% tax. We believe this business model is predatory and cannot afford to lose money on our own merch, especially so far from home.”
Ongoing issue
The issue of venue merchandise commissions has become a hot topic across the live music industry in recent years, with many artists speaking out against venues taking a percentage of merchandise sales. Critics argue that such fees directly impact one of the few income streams bands retain while touring, particularly for smaller and mid level acts.
Despite the setback, Silent Planet have found an alternative way to thank fans attending the Milan show, rather than leave concertgoers empty handed, the band announced plans to give away merchandise during their performance and provide supporters with an online discount option later in the tour.
“However, I’ve spoken with so many of you outside the venue already, and I know many have traveled far to be here. So we will be throwing out shirts during the set, and will also provide an online EU discount code for those who wish to purchase our merch at the end of this tour.”
“Thanks for your support.”
While merchandise disputes are nothing new in the touring world, Silent Planet’s response has quickly resonated with fans, many praising the band for prioritising supporters over absorbing costs they believe are unfair.
