Interview: Dani Filth And Dez Fafara Talk Touring Together, Metal Myths And Australian Slang Ahead Of This Week’s Australian Tour

Share

With just days until Cradle Of Filth and DevilDriver unleash one of this year’s heaviest touring packages across Australia, we caught up with two of metal’s most recognisable frontmenDani Filth and Dez Fafara.

The conversation with Devildriver frontman Dez Fafara and Cradle of Filth frontman Dani Filth covers everything from three decades in heavy music to Australian slang and backstage randomness.

Having each spent more than 30 years leading legendary bands, both musicians reflected on the mutual respect they’ve built over the years and what they admire about each other’s careers and rather than focusing solely on music, the discussion explored the personalities behind two of extreme metal’s most iconic figures.

The pair also tackled one of heavy music’s longest running misconceptions, discussing the biggest myths that still surround metal and the people who create it, for fans who grew up thinking either frontman was genuinely terrifying (myself maybe included), the interview offers a reminder that appearances rarely tell the full story.

Life on the road

No conversation with seasoned touring veterans would be complete without a few stories from the road, while some tales remain firmly off limits, Dani and Dez shared what they could about life backstage, memorable experiences from previous tours and some of the more unexpected moments they’ve encountered while visiting Australia.

With Cradle Of Filth and DevilDriver previously joining forces for a hugely successful North American run, we also asked what made this partnership work so well that bringing it to Australian audiences became the obvious next step.

Things became considerably less serious when the pair took on an Australian slang challenge, attempting to decipher phrases including “taking the piss”, “piece of piss” and “cold one”, with predictably entertaining results.

We also discovered who considers themselves the more Australian of the two, touched on surprising facts fans may not know, including Dez’s passion for surfing, and looked ahead to what’s next, including DevilDriver’s upcoming album Strike and Kill, arriving this Friday, July 10th.

The Australian tour kicks off this Thursday in Brisbane, bringing together two powerhouse acts for full headline performances packed with classics, crushing riffs and theatrical spectacle.
