Amon Amarth Strip Things Back With First Ever Acoustic Single ‘Upphaf’

Share

Swedish metal heavyweights Amon Amarth have taken an unexpected turn, unveiling their first ever acoustic recording with the release of “Upphaf”.

Known worldwide for crushing riffs, thunderous drums and Viking inspired anthems, Amon Amarth have traded distortion for atmosphere on the new track, offering fans a more restrained yet equally cinematic side of their songwriting.

Rather than abandoning the themes that have defined their career, “Upphaf” leans even further into the mythology and storytelling at the heart of Amon Amarth’s music.

Built around haunting melodies, layered vocal arrangements and a sparse acoustic foundation, the song feels closer to an ancient Nordic tale shared around a fire than the explosive live spectacle fans have come to expect.

Produced by Jacob Hansen and released through Metal Blade Records, “Upphaf” arrives alongside an official music video directed by Pavel Trebukhin, while the track marks unfamiliar territory for the Swedish outfit, it also serves as a teaser for what’s still to come, acting as the calm before the storm ahead of their next studio album.

Three decades and counting

For more than three decades, Amon Amarth have established themselves as one of metal’s most consistent and influential bands, since forming in Tumba, Sweden, in 1992, they’ve built a global following through relentless touring and a catalogue that has helped shape modern melodic death metal.

The band’s reputation has only continued to grow, with headline appearances at some of the world’s biggest rock and metal festivals, including Germany’s legendary Wacken Open Air, Download Festival in the UK and Bloodstock, where their fans helped popularise the now-famous “Viking Row” crowd tradition.

Commercially, Amon Amarth have also continued to climb. Albums including Jomsviking, Berserker and The Great Heathen Army have topped charts across Europe while earning critical acclaim and expanding the band’s audience well beyond the traditional metal community.

The release of “Upphaf” arrives as excitement continues to build around Amon Amarth’s upcoming North American tour alongside Dethklok and Castle Rat. If this acoustic detour is any indication, the band’s next chapter could be one of their most adventurous yet.

“Upphaf” is available now on all major streaming platforms via Metal Blade Records.
