C.O.F.F.I.N Announce 2027 Australian Tour, Share Surprising Single '13 Days'

Sydney punks C.O.F.F.I.N will take their upcoming sixth album Out in Oslo on the road at the start of next year, with a run of capital-city shows booked in across February and March 2027.

The tour will include two of the band’s biggest-ever headlining shows to date, including the 850-capacity Max Watt’s in Melbourne and the 800-capacity Factory Theatre in their native Sydney. It follows on from their surprise appearance at last month’s King Street Crawl, with a last-minute set at Marrickville’s Vic on the Park, as well as their announcement on the line-up for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s Croxton Block Party in Melbourne this October. To coincide with the tour’s announcment, the band have shared the album’s third single ’13 Days’. The song marks a significant sonic departure for the band, as it was originally written by lead singer and drummer Ben Portnoy on acoustic guitar. The song’s arrangement is inspired by western film scores and outlaw country, a far cry from the band’s usual frenetic punk rock.

“Declan [Mehrtens, producer and Amyl & The Sniffers guitarist] asked if we had anything in the works that was a real step away from our compositional comfort zone,” explained Portnoy in a press statement. “Kosty [bassist Steven Kostogiannis] had been staying at my place and overheard me the night before on the acoustic tinkering with a solo song and suggested, ‘What about that one from last night?'”

Portnoy noted that he was “quick to shut the idea down,” insisting that ’13 Days’ “wasn’t a C.O.F.F.I.N song”. After some persuading from Mehrtens, however, the frontman showed his bandmates the song. He says they were “really supportive and excited about the idea of having our first acoustic track” as part of Out in Oslo.

“We were reminded that any song is a C.O.F.F.I.N song once we’re all playing it together,” said Portnoy. “We’re lucky not to feel restricted by a genre or external expectations.”

’13 Days’ critiques the surveillance state

When describing the new single from a lyrical standpoint, Portnoy explained that its central focus was “the folly of our legal system”. “The song documents… the story of two friends who were facing potential jail time for acts of on-the-street justice that didn’t involve anyone being hurt,” he said. “They were given 13 days from January 1 to figure out their defence and fund it.”

The song’s music video, which Portnoy also directed, is shot from the perspective of a CCTV camera set up at a laundromat. This was done to reflect a key aspect of his friends’ legal trouble, in which “CCTV was one of the main tools used” to track them down.

“[It] became a disputable piece of evidence during the trial,” says Portnoy. “It seemed a fitting track to give the surveillance video clip set-up a go. Official and unofficial surveillance is ubiquitous today, and I understand the temptation and need for its use.

“Nevertheless, surveillance being used as a device for control concerns me, as does the bias of what our eyes believe to see through a distorted machine’s eye with a low frame rate and locked-off perspective. Trying to retroactively piece together a scene witnessed from that limited impression leaves a lot open to interpretation.”

In addition to announcing the tour and sharing the single, C.O.F.F.I.N have also announced two further screenings of their documentary 10,000 Miles from Oslo for later this week. After selling out screenings in Sydney and Melbourne last month, the revealing film about the band’s unexpected 21-year career will now screen in Brisbane this Friday (August 28th) at New Farm Cinemas and on Sunday (August 30th) in Adelaide at Palace Nova.
