From Ashes to New paused their show at 170 Russell in Melbourne twice on 11 October to check on audience members.
Melbourne’s Banks Arcade opened the night, with their vocalist telling the hometown crowd it was an honour to support the American headliners.
The first stoppage during From Ashes to New’s set came after an audience member was struck in the head by a stage diver. After checking she was alright, the band invited her and a friend to watch the rest of the show from side of stage.
Matt Brandyberry then explained the band’s emergency signal: anyone needing help should raise their arms in an X above their head. He joked that fans shouldn’t abuse it simply to interrupt the performance.
Around ten minutes later, the band stopped again when a man towards the back of the venue felt faint. After checking with those around him and confirming he was alright, they resumed the set.
Brandyberry also told the crowd he had suffered food poisoning two days earlier but was determined to play. He thanked his bandmates individually, explaining that he was the only original member remaining, and singled out Danny Case as a singer who deserved greater recognition.
The Melbourne crowd sang along with Case during ‘Die for You’.
A birthday cake appeared onstage for Brandyberry, prompting calls from the crowd for a birthday shoey.
Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ played over the PA as the crowd left 170 Russell.
