Matt McGachy and Danny Marino’s plans to make music together date back to the early 2000s. Their quartet now has a debut album in the works.
Meridian Veil, the Canadian progressive extreme metal band featuring Cryptopsy vocalist Matt McGachy and guitarist Danny Marino of the now-disbanded The Agonist, have signed to French independent label Season of Mist.
The label’s 3 November announcement introduces a quartet completed by Seven Spires drummer Dylan Gowan and Raphael Weinroth-Browne, the cellist known for his touring work with Leprous.
Australian audiences last had the chance to catch McGachy with Cryptopsy on their December 2025 All So Vile tour. Meridian Veil puts that familiar voice in a different setting, alongside Marino’s guitar, Gowan’s drums and Weinroth-Browne’s cello.
For Marino and McGachy, the idea predates the signing by more than two decades. Marino says they wanted to make music together after meeting in the early 2000s, with emotional intensity central to the project from the beginning.
He describes their upcoming debut as a heavy record with a sense of longing running through the cautionary story at its centre. That gives McGachy, familiar to Cryptopsy listeners for his extreme-metal vocals, room to explore another side of his singing.
“Singing in this band is freeing for me. I’m happy to show that side of myself,” he says in the announcement.
The members’ descriptions place the music between dark progressive metal and the death-metal sounds of the 2000s. Gowan points to the different backgrounds of its writers, while Weinroth-Browne says the songwriting drew him in when he heard the demos.
Listeners have a short introduction available: Season of Mist has shared a 32-second trailer for lead single ‘The Watcher’.
Further album details are still to come, with the title or release date yet to be confirmed.
