Kenny Hickey says Type O Negative’s surviving members received a substantial offer for a Peter Steele tribute show, but the work involved would make a single appearance impractical.
“We got offered one show for a lot of money,” Hickey told HardLore, in comments transcribed by Blabbermouth. He did not disclose the amount.
The guitarist explained that getting everyone playing the songs again, rehearsing and developing the stage production would be a considerable undertaking. He said it would take multiple shows to make that work worthwhile, with finding musicians capable of handling Steele’s parts another major obstacle.
Hickey was particularly sceptical about recreating Steele’s bass playing: “Nobody can play bass like him.”
He hasn’t ruled out a future tribute if the logistics can be worked out, but said it would not happen now. No dates or guest performers were announced.
Kenny Hickey ‘The Life & Death of Type O Negative
Type O Negative ended following Steele’s passing in April 2010, aged 48. Hickey, drummer Johnny Kelly and keyboardist Josh Silver are the surviving members of the band’s final line-up.
In April, Hickey had spoken about being open to a limited run with guest singers, while saying Silver was reluctant to participate. His latest interview puts the practical demands of those shows into focus, with the offer for a single appearance falling short of what he says the project would need.
The discussion comes as younger listeners continue discovering the band. As previously reported, Hickey recently credited TikTok with expanding Type O Negative’s audience, pointing to the renewed attention around ‘I Don’t Wanna Be Me’.
There is also a Type O Negative live album in progress. In October, Hickey told Loaded Radio that editing was almost finished and Mike Marciano was expected to mix it, following a successful test with ‘Love You To Death’. He said he hoped to release the recording in the first quarter of 2027.
Hickey and Kelly’s band Silvertomb will release their second album, The Interpretation Of Nightmares, on Friday, November 13th through Steamhammer. The eight-track record follows their 2019 debut Edge Of Existence and includes ‘No Way To Live’.
