Sepultura Play Their Final Show With Special Guests In São Paulo

Share

Sepultura have played the final show of their Celebrating Life Through Death farewell tour, bringing former guitarist Jairo Guedz and guests from across the metal scene to the stage in São Paulo.

The send-off took place at Suhai Music Hall on Saturday, November 7th, with Sacred Reich, Krisiun and Metal Allegiance also on the bill. It ended a farewell run that began in March 2024 and reached Australia earlier this year.

Derrick Green, Andreas Kisser, Paulo Jr. and Greyson Nekrutman opened with ‘Arise’ and finished with ‘Roots Bloody Roots’, working through the band’s early thrash records, later catalogue and this years EP The Cloud Of Unknowing. ‘Territory’, ‘Refuse/Resist’ and ‘Attitude’ shared the set with newer songs including ‘The Place’ and ‘Beyond The Dream’.

Guedz returned for ‘Biotech Is Godzilla’, ‘Slave New World’ and ‘Troops Of Doom’. He played on Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions before Kisser replaced him in 1987, giving the farewell a direct connection to the band’s earliest recordings.

Ratos de Porão’s João Gordo appeared on ‘Reza’, while Krisiun guitarist Moyses Kolesne joined ‘Itsári’ and ‘Kaiowas’. Sepultura also made room for Ratos de Porão covers ‘Crucificados Pelo Sistema’ and ‘Beber Até Morrer’.

Chained Saint’s Ethan Kahn and Sean Sterling joined ‘Propaganda’, with Kisser’s son Yohan appearing on ‘Convicted In Life’. Eminence’s Allan Wallace and Torture Squad drummer Amilcar Christófaro were also among the guests.

Some of the selections reached well beyond the usual farewell staples. According to the fan-compiled record on Setlist.fm, ‘Itsári’ returned for the first time since 1998, while ‘Reza’ had not appeared since 2005.

Australian fans said their goodbyes during March’s final national tour, which visited Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. BLUNT documented the March 25th stop at the Forum, with Alexander Hallag’s photos capturing the Melbourne farewell.

Although the concert was billed as Sepultura’s last, Kisser has previously left the possibility of future activity open. Speaking to Metal On Tap earlier this year, as transcribed by Blabbermouth, he said: “The important thing is that we’re gonna stop now.”
