We Came As Romans’ Andrew Glass On Broken Toes, Balcony Jumpers And The Wildest Moments Of A Life On Tour

Share

If you’ve followed We Came As Romans for any length of time, you already know their career hasn’t been boring.

For Australian fans, We Came As Romans 2023 headline tour became unforgettable for reasons that went far beyond the stage. That run saw guitarist Josh Moore dragged from his hotel room in Adelaide, locked out while a thief barricaded himself inside, before ultimately jumping five storeys from a balcony in a moment that landed the band across national news, it was one of those stories that felt too absurd to be real, until you remembered this is life on tour.

Bassist Andrew Glass sat down to reflect on some of the most unforgettable moments of his career, from busted toes and onstage proposals to stone cold sober hotel room forts and headline making hotel chaos, these are the stories that stuck.

Andrew Glass: Five Unforgettable We Came As Romans Moments

The Crowd Surf That Went Very Wrong

There was one time when, back in 2008/2009, we were touring with Alisana, The World Alive, Of Mice And Men and A Skylight Drive and we were like the opening band and it’s a crazy throwback. Our guitarist was like “Hey, we should jump in the crowd.” And I was like, “yeah, we’ll do it. Last song.” And then he jumps in the crowd playing guitar, everyone picks him up, he’s just getting thrown around, looks like a rockstar. Super awesome. Eventually goes over the barricade, land security, makes sure he gets there safe. He’s high fiving people playing guitar. I do the same shit. No one catches me laying on my ass, I’m still playing. I’m like, “fuck, this is killing me.” And then they throw me back over. But my foot gets caught in that barricade where the little step with the railing is where they can pick people up when they’re coming down.

And so my big toe gets caught in it, I keep falling over when I’m walking. I’m like, “oh my God, what is happening? I can’t walk on my foot.” And so I’m playing on the ground and then the song’s over and they’re trying to taking my shoe off. I can’t get my shoe off. And so my toe is just sticking straight up. And so then they had to drive me to the hospital and get x-rays and then snap my toe all the way back. And then I had to wear this boot.

Onstage Proposals Gone Sideways

Another one would be, I mean, I guess a collective thing. Another crazy thing that I never thought would really happen is we had multiple people propose on stage. Some of those proposals work, some didn’t. At this point we’re at this point it’s a little iffy. We’re always like, yeah, it’s cool, but just make sure you read the room a little bit. So that’s always awesome.

Playing Warped Tour With Riff Raff

Another cool thing too is for me personally, I got to play bass on Warp Tour with Riff Raff, who is this rapper that was out for a while. So I was playing my set then running to play his set. And I was with one of the dudes Cam from Beartooth, former Beartooth member. And so that was really fun. It was like awesome playing and being like, fucking go. I got to go do this.

The Melbourne Hotel Fort

So we had zero sleep on the flight over to Australia our headline tour in 2023, and so we were all so slap happy and then all the lights were off and we were all napping and we couldn’t sleep because the time zone was all up. So then we started building this fort, at the Croxton Hotel in Melbourne and then the fort got out of control and we were stone sober too. We were just laughing so hard. And we built this fort and then the venue got kind of mad and we’re like, “dude, we’re so sorry we put the fort back.” But yeah, that was our whole thing.

The Adelaide Balcony Incident

Actually, probably one of the craziest things ever was when we were in Adelaide on the last headliner in 2023, we were getting ready to leave for the airport. We played the show in Adelaide. It was great. And then in the morning we had to be up at 7:00 AM to be down at the lobby call to go to the airport, check out the gear and fly.

And we get downstairs and our guitarist Josh comes running up to the front desk and says “you need to call the cops right now.” I was brushing my teeth, someone knocked on my door, grabbed me, pulled me out of the room, and then ran into the room and closed the door and locked it. And he’s like, “I can’t get in my room.” So we all got up and we’re like, “let’s go and find some bolt cutters knocking this door down.” We were going to get this dude. We’re all amped up. So we all run up, they call the cops and we’re banging on the door. We’re like, “open up dude.” And there’s 15 of us. It’s like the band and the crew. We get these bolt cutters, we crack open the door, bust through, and we’re looking for this dude and he is nowhere to be found.

And we’re like, “where the fuck is this guy?” he might’ve run off whatever. I’m looking and I’m like, “oh my god”. Dude, the balcony door is wide open and the curtain is floating through, so I go and I step out in the balcony, we’re on the fifth floor and I look down and this dude had jumped five stories, landed on a truck bed and then rolled over. There’s two construction workers looking at him. The dude’s alive, he’s okay, but his head is smacked and his foot is in the wrong direction. And we’re like, “oh shit”. And so we run downstairs, all these cops come, all the news comes, they’re interviewing us and we’re like, “make sure this guy’s okay.”

The cops were like, “Hey Josh, we found your passport in his pocket. We found a bunch of other people’s cell phones and credit cards in his pocket too. We found also some drugs in his other pocket.”

This dude was busted up and on something and we were just like, “holy shit”. And we’re just like, “we just need the passport. Make sure that Josh got none of his other stuff stolen. We have to go make our flight.” And we were all over the news.

You can check out the news report here:

Then they’re like, “do you want to press charges?” And we’re like, “no, we’re all good. No one in our campus hurt. And this dude’s clearly on drugs. He needs some help. The last thing we want to do is press charges, make his life more. Hell, he already needs help, so just let him do his thing.”

After that anywhere we’d go they’d be like, “you guys were on TV with the guy that jumped out the building.” And they’re like, “but is he trying to steal gear?” And we’re like, “no, all our gear was somewhere else safely stored.” But yeah, that was probably one of the craziest things.
